Medicare Advantage Rx Drug Plans for Seniors

This year brings several significant updates to Medicare Part D prescription drug plans. These changes aim to ease the financial burden for millions of Americans, particularly those with sky-high prescription drug expenses.

Each year, members of Medicare Advantage plans receive an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). Any changes and updates, like those taking place in 2025, can be found in the ANOC. It’s important to read that document, especially when prescription drug plans are evolving.

What does Medicare Part D drug plans cover?
When you shop for prescription drug plans, it pays to do your homework about what Medicare Advantage Part D actually covers. The prescription drug coverage option is available to people enrolled in Medicare. It gives access to prescription drugs within your plan’s formulary. It doesn’t cover plan premiums or medications that are already covered by Medicare Part B.

If a prescription is not covered, options include exploring generic equivalents, finding alternatives within the plan’s formulary, requesting an exception or switching plans during the annual Open Enrollment Period.

Medicare Part D drug benefits cover vaccines to help keep their members healthy and vaccinates, including COVID-19, flu, pneumonia, RSV and shingles, at no cost.

New Out-of-Pocket Cap
Medicare Part D drug plans now feature an annual $2,000 out-of-pocket spending cap. Once your total out-of-pocket costs reach the limit, you will not need to pay for covered drugs for the rest of the year. This new policy offers financial relief, particularly if you have high drug expenses and do not qualify for the federal Extra Help program.

How the cap works

  • Automatic enrollment. The cap is automatic for anyone in a Medicare Part D plan. Your plan tracks your spending and notifies you when you hit a limit.
  • Covered costs. This cap applies to deductibles, copayments and coinsurance for Part D-covered medications.
  • Exclusions. The cap does not cover premiums, drugs excluded in your plan’s formulary or Medicare Part B-covered medications, such as injectable drugs.

New Medicare Prescription Payment Plans

While this payment plan doesn’t lower your prescription drug costs, it can help you better manage your expenses.

If you’re seeking more manageable payment options, the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan may allow you to pay out-of-pocket monthly costs to your plan, rather than the pharmacy. This voluntary option is free and available to all Part D and Medicare Advantage enrollees with drug coverage.

Fewer Part D Prescription Drug Plans
Compared with 2024, according to Medicare.gov, there are now about 26% fewer stand-alone Part D plans. Review your choices during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period to ensure it meets your medication needs. For more details, try contacting a Prominence Medicare Advantage agent.

Reviewing your current plan and considering all of your options will help you maximize the benefits of the new Medicare Advantage Part D structure.
