Some people may receive Medicare Advantage automatically while others have to sign up for it. Either way, receiving retirement or disability benefits from Social Security at age 65 depends on several factors. Are you ready? It’s time to make important decisions about choosing plans and providers, and selecting pharmacies and prescription drug coverage.*
If you apply for retirement benefits from Social Security at least four months before turning 65, you’ll receive Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Medicare Part B (medical insurance) when you hit the big 65.
Original Medicare typically does not cover:
- Prescription drugs
- Dental benefits
- Vision benefits
- Hearing care
Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage?
Choosing the right Medicare Advantage plan can feel overwhelming. With so many options, it’s important to know which Medicare Advantage plans suit your wellness goals and your budget.
Established in 1965, Original Medicare consists of Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. Part A covers inpatient hospital stays and some nursing care, while Part B covers outpatient services, preventive care and medical supplies.
Medicare Advantage (or Medicare Part C) plans work in place of Part A and Part B Medicare coverage. Benefits may include medical expenses but not prescription drugs. Offered through private insurance and regulated by Medicare and the federal government, Part C provides additional benefits such as dental, vision and wellness programming.
What is Medicare Part D?
Medicare drug coverage (also known as Medicare Part D) helps members pay for brand-name and generic drugs. Part D is offered to enrollees along with Medicare Advantage by insurance companies and private companies that are regulated by Medicare and the federal government.
Some plans include Part D prescription drug coverage, which can be easier to manage and have lower medication costs. Additionally, most Medicare Advantage plans include an annual out-of-pocket maximum which caps your in-pocket spending. (Original Medicare doesn’t typically offer this.)
Medicare Part D protects members with pre-existing conditions, especially people who manage long-term medical conditions with sky-high annual expenses. Medicare Advantage plans offer enrollees a convenient way to manage their needs by combining hospital and medical – plus drug coverage – under a single coordinated plan.
