Medicare Advantage and Your Heart Health

Discover Medicare Advantage Plans for Heart Disease
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and has been for the last century, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). Cardiovascular disease is so prevalent, it makes good sense to enroll in a Medicare Advantage cardiac plan if you have a related condition.
What is a Medicare Advantage cardiac plan?
Some Medicare Advantage plans are designed for patients with cardiac conditions. Preventive services can help you manage the condition with specialized cardiovascular care. Having access to a network of local providers and educational opportunities can help you stay on top of heart health. Some health insurance plans will even send you no-cost supplies like cuffs to help monitor your own blood pressure.
What does Original Medicare cover for heart disease?
Medicare Part A covers hospitalization due to cardiac conditions. Medicare Part B covers preventive care for heart disease. The latter includes blood screenings for cholesterol levels, lipid levels and triglyceride levels.
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover medications for the maintenance of heart disease. If you take prescription drugs for a heart condition, however, those medications are likely covered by Medicare Part D prescription coverage.
If you have a qualifying condition, certain Medicare Advantage plans cover cardiac rehabilitation programs with clinical counseling and exercise programs to boost the patient’s overall health.
If you live with a chronic heart condition, a more robust Medicare Advantage cardiac plan with Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage may be the best choice. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans, or C-SNPs, for those with heart disease and other common chronic conditions.
Do I qualify for a Medicare Advantage cardiac plan?
First, you must live in the plan’s service area and be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. To qualify for a cardiac Medicare Advantage plan, a primary care doctor must diagnose you with one or more chronic heart conditions, including:
- Coronary artery disease
- Congestive heart failure
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Chronic venous thromboembolic disorder
After diagnosis, members can work with an insurance broker or call a Medicare Advantage cardiac plan to apply and enroll.
Medicare Advantage dental coverage and heart health
Did you know that your dental care and heart health are connected? If you have a heart condition, regular dental care may be especially important. According to AHA, people with gum disease have a greater risk of heart attack. In that case, a Medicare Advantage plan with dental coverage could be ideal. Look for dental benefits that include routine cleanings and coverage for oral surgery and restorative care (like dentures).
When it comes to chronic heart conditions, Medicare Advantage plans offer more comprehensive benefits than Original Medicare. Smart comparison shopping can uncover the health insurance plan that best meets your needs, from prescription medications to dental provider access.
